Culinary Arts College Degree Programs

As with a number of other trades or professions in Alabama, there are multiple degree programs that are offered in the culinary arts. At the most basic level, you can sign up for a nearby cooking class, which are more casual in nature and can run from several hours to a few weeks. Generally a diploma or a certificate is offered after completion. They can be comprehensive in nature, for example instructing how to cook Italian dishes, or they may be rather targeted and focus on one dish, for example Crepes Suzette. Of course if you are searching for a more conventional education applicable for a career in the restaurant profession, you will most likely want to enroll in a degree program. With a degree program, you will be required to invest considerably more time.

  • Associate's Degrees can require as long as 6 months to two years to finish.
  • Bachelor's Degrees usually involve as much as four years of instruction.
  • Masters Degrees can take an additional 2 years or more after obtaining a Bachelor's.

More advanced educational alternatives may be available, such as specialized or Doctoral programs offered by culinary arts institutes. The most important issue to remember when determining which degree to strive for is making sure that it supplies the education and degree required to advance your ultimate career objectives.

Cooking Colleges

When you have made your choice regarding the type of instruction and degree that you wish to pursue, you can begin your search for the culinary arts school, college or institute that offers it. For instance, if your goal is to train to be a chef specializing in Spanish cuisine, then obviously you will concentrate on those colleges that offer the proper training. Or you can opt for a college based on its ranking or other criteria (we'll cover some of those later) and then choose the best degree program available that is consistent with your career objectives in Alabama. However you make your choice, cooking schools typically fit within three different categories:

  • Cooking Schools. A few cooking schools do offer degree programs, but in most cases they offer certificates or diplomas. Their programs tend to be more focused in nature, and they can range anywhere from one or two months to as long as 3 to 4 years.
  • Community Colleges. Area community colleges can often be more inexpensive than the majority of private colleges and many have exceptional programs. They almost solely offer Associate's Degrees and are founded and maintained by either local or state governments.
  • Culinary Schools and Institutes. The more advanced degrees and training are provided by culinary schools and institutes. Some institutes provide the most renowned as well as the highest level of training in academia. But bear in mind, since they are private institutions they generally can be more expensive than their public counterparts, some much more.

Choosing a culinary school will not only be based on the kind of program or degree you wish to pursue, but also the amount of money you have to spend on your education. If you decide to attend a public institution to lower costs, keep in mind that out-of-state residents normally have to pay a higher tuition than in-state residents. Furthermore, numerous community colleges and regional public schools have lower tuition rates for area residents. So be sure to research the public alternatives within Alabama to discover the most affordable options.

Online Culinary Schools

One alternative is to enroll in online classes within the comfort of one's home. The convenience and flexibility makes it the best solution for a number of students that are still working full time while going to college. In addition there are more programs online than ever before that are accredited. Bear in mind that a considerable portion of the training will be furnished under an externship. Externships are programs where students train under local chefs or other cooking practitioners to ensure that they receive practical training outside of the internet classroom. Just make certain that the online college you choose is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved agency (more on this later). And so if you are dedicated enough to be able to participate in classes and study in this more independent fashion, earning a culinary online degree might be the ideal option for you.
