Culinary School Degree Programs

As with a number of other professions or trades in Arizona, there are multiple degree options that are available in the culinary arts. At the most basic level, you can join a local cooking course, which are more informal in nature and can last from several hours to several weeks. Frequently a certificate or a diploma is offered at the time of completion. They may be broad in nature, for instance instructing how to cook French meals, or they may be rather targeted and concentrate on one dish, such as Crepes Suzette. Of course if you are searching for a more formal education suitable for a career in the restaurant industry, you will undoubtedly choose to pursue a degree program. With a degree program, you will be required to devote significantly more time.

  • Associate's Degrees can require as long as six months to 2 years to complete.
  • Bachelor's Degrees generally require as much as 4 years of training.
  • Masters Degrees can take an additional 2 years or even longer after receiving a Bachelor's.

More advanced educational options may be offered, including specialized or Doctoral programs offered by culinary arts institutes. The most important issue to bear in mind when determining which degree to pursue is ensuring that it provides the degree and education necessary to advance your ultimate career objectives.

Culinary Colleges

After you have made your choice regarding the type of instruction and degree that you wish to pursue, you can begin your search for the culinary school, college or institute that offers it. For example, if your dream is to train to be a chef specializing in Spanish cuisine, then obviously you will focus on those colleges that furnish the suitable training. Or you can choose a college based on its reputation or other factors (we'll review several of those later) and then pick the most ideal degree program offered that is simpatico with your career objectives in Arizona. However you arrive at your decision, cooking schools generally fall under 3 distinct categories:

  • Cooking Schools. A few cooking schools do offer degree programs, but generally they offer diplomas or certificates. Their programs tend to be more focused in nature, and they can range anywhere from 1 or 2 months to as long as three to four years.
  • Community Colleges. Regional community colleges can often be more affordable than the majority of private colleges and many have outstanding programs. They almost solely offer Associate's Degrees and are founded and managed by either local or state governments.
  • Culinary Schools and Institutes. The more advanced training and degrees are offered by culinary arts schools and institutes. Several institutes provide the most highly regarded as well as the highest level of training in academia. Unfortunately, since they are private schools they generally can be more expensive than their public counterparts, some a lot more.

Picking a culinary school will not only be based on the kind of degree or program you want to pursue, but also how much you have to invest in your education. If you decide to enroll in a public institution to minimize expenses, remember that out-of-state residents usually have to pay a higher tuition than in-state residents. In addition, a lot of community colleges and regional public schools have lower tuition rates for area residents. So don't forget to research the public options within Arizona to locate the most affordable options.

Online Culinary Colleges

One alternative is to enroll in online classes within the convenience of one's home. The practicality and flexibility makes it the best solution for some students that are still working full-time while attending classes. Also there are more programs online than ever that are accredited. Remember that a considerable part of the instruction will be furnished through an externship. Externships are programs where students work under local chefs or other cooking professionals to ensure that they obtain practical training outside of the online classroom. Just make sure that the online program you choose is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged organization (more on this later). So if you are disciplined enough to be able to go to classes and study using this more independent fashion, obtaining a culinary arts online degree just might be the best option for you.
