Culinary Arts School Degree Options

As with a number of other professions or trades in New Hampshire, there are several degree options that are offered in the culinary arts. At the most elemental level, you can enroll in a nearby cooking course, which are more informal in nature and can last from a few hours to several weeks. Generally a diploma or a certificate is awarded after completion. They may be comprehensive in nature, for example demonstrating how to cook French dishes, or they may be rather specific and concentrate on one dish, such as Crepes Suzette. Of course if you are searching for a more conventional education applicable for a career in the restaurant industry, you will probably want to pursue a degree program. With a degree program, you will be obligated to devote considerably more time.

  • Associate's Degrees can require anywhere from six months to 2 years to finish.
  • Bachelor's Degrees generally entail as much as 4 years of instruction.
  • Masters Degrees can take an additional two years or more after receiving a Bachelor's.

Additional advanced training alternatives may be offered, such as specialized or Doctoral programs offered by culinary arts institutes. Probably the most important point to keep in mind when determining which degree to pursue is ensuring that it supplies the education and degree needed to advance your ultimate career goals.

Cooking Colleges

After you have made your selection regarding the type of training and degree that you want to pursue, you can begin your search for the culinary school, college or institute that offers it. For example, if your goal is to become a chef specializing in Spanish cuisine, then of course you will focus on those schools that furnish the appropriate training. Or you can pick a college based on its reputation or other factors (we'll cover a few of those later) and then choose the most ideal degree program available that is simpatico with your career goals in New Hampshire. However you make your choice, culinary schools typically fit within 3 different categories:

  • Cooking Schools. A few cooking schools do offer degree programs, but usually they offer certificates or diplomas. Their programs tend to be more focused in nature, and they can range anywhere from one or two months to as long as three or four years.
  • Community Colleges. Regional community colleges can often be more inexpensive than most private colleges and many have outstanding programs. They almost solely offer Associate's Degrees and are founded and maintained by either state or local governments.
  • Culinary Schools and Institutes. The advanced degrees and training are offered by culinary arts schools and institutes. Some institutes provide the most renowned as well as the highest standard of training in academia. However, since they are private schools they often can be more expensive than their public counterparts, some much more.

Selecting a culinary institute will not only be dependent on the kind of program or degree you wish to pursue, but also the amount of money you have to invest in your education. If you decide to enroll in a public institution to reduce costs, remember that out-of-state residents usually have to pay a higher tuition than in-state residents. Furthermore, a lot of community colleges and regional public schools have lower tuition fees for area residents. So make sure to look into the public options within New Hampshire to discover the most affordable options.

Online Cooking Classes

One solution is to enroll in online training within the comfort of one's residence. The convenience and flexibility makes it the single solution for some students that continue working full time while going to college. In addition there are more programs online than ever before that are accredited. Keep in mind that a substantial component of the instruction will be furnished under an externship. Externships are programs where students work with area chefs or other culinary arts practitioners so that they receive practical training beyond the internet classroom. Just make sure that the online college you choose is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized organization (more on this later). So if you are disciplined enough to be able to attend classes and study using this more independent method, attaining a culinary online degree may be the right choice for you.
