Culinary School Degree Programs

Just as with numerous other trades or professions in Wyoming, there are multiple degree programs that are offered in the culinary arts. At the most elemental level, you can sign up for a nearby cooking course, which are more casual in nature and can last from just a few hours to a few weeks. Often a certificate or a diploma is provided upon completion. They may be broad in nature, such as instructing how to cook Spanish dishes, or they may be very targeted and concentrate on one dish, for instance Crepes Suzette. Naturally if you are looking for a more conventional education applicable for a career in the restaurant profession, you will most likely want to pursue a degree program. With a degree program, you will be obligated to devote significantly more time.

  • Associate's Degrees can take as long as 6 months to 2 years to finish.
  • Bachelor's Degrees usually entail as much as 4 years of training.
  • Masters Degrees can take an added 2 years or even longer after obtaining a Bachelor's.

Additional advanced educational alternatives may be offered, such as Doctoral programs or specialized programs made available by culinary arts institutes. Probably the most important issue to remember when deciding on which degree to pursue is making sure that it supplies the education and credential necessary to advance your ultimate career goals.

Cooking Institutes

When you have made your selection regarding the type of training and degree that you would like to pursue, you can start your search for the culinary school, college or institute that offers it. For instance, if your goal is to train to be a chef specializing in Spanish cuisine, then obviously you will concentrate on those institutes that furnish the appropriate training. Or you can select a college based on its reputation or other factors (we'll review a few of those later) and then pick the best degree program offered that is consistent with your career objectives in Wyoming. However you make your choice, culinary schools basically fit within three distinct categories:

  • Cooking Schools. Certain cooking schools do offer degree programs, but usually they offer diplomas or certificates. Their courses tend to be more specialized in nature, and they can range anywhere from 1 or 2 months to as long as 3 or 4 years.
  • Community Colleges. Regional community colleges can be more economical than the majority of private colleges and many have outstanding programs. They almost exclusively offer Associate's Degrees and are founded and managed by either local or state governments.
  • Culinary Schools and Institutes. The more advanced degrees and training are offered by culinary arts colleges and institutes. Some institutes provide the most respected and highest level of training in academia. Unfortunately, since they are private schools they tend to be more costly than their public counterparts, some much more.

Selecting a culinary arts college will not only be dependent on the kind of degree or program you would like to pursue, but also the amount of money you have to invest in your education. If you decide to attend a public school to minimize costs, keep in mind that out-of-state residents usually must pay a higher tuition than in-state residents. Furthermore, many community colleges and regional public schools have lower tuition rates for local residents. So be sure to research the public options within Wyoming to discover the most affordable options.

Culinary Online Schools

One solution is to attend online training within the convenience of one's home. The accessibility and flexibility makes it the best solution for a number of students that continue working full-time while attending classes. Also there are more schools online than ever before that are accredited. Remember that a substantial part of the training will be provided under an externship. Externships are programs where students train under local chefs or other cooking professionals so that they obtain practical training outside of the online classroom. Just be sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged agency (more on this later). And so if you are dedicated enough to be able to attend classes and study in this more independent method, obtaining a cooking degree online might be the right choice for you.
