Culinary Institute Degree Programs

As with a number of other trades or professions in Utah, there are multiple degree options that are available in the culinary arts. At the most basic level, you can join a local cooking class, which are more informal in nature and can last from just a few hours to several weeks. Typically a diploma or a certificate is presented after completion. They may be broad in nature, for example teaching how to cook French meals, or they may be quite targeted and concentrate on one dish, for example Crepes Suzette. Of course if you are searching for a more conventional education geared towards a career in the restaurant profession, you will most likely want to pursue a degree program. With a degree program, you will be required to devote significantly more time.

  • Associate's Degrees can require anywhere from 6 months to two years to finish.
  • Bachelor's Degrees normally call for as much as 4 years of training.
  • Masters Degrees can take an additional 2 years or more after acquiring a Bachelor's.

Even more advanced educational options may be offered, including Doctoral programs or specialized programs made available by culinary arts institutes. The most important point to keep in mind when determining which degree to strive for is making sure that it provides the education and credential necessary to advance your ultimate career objectives.

Cooking Institutes

When you have made your decision regarding the kind of training and degree that you wish to pursue, you can begin your search for the culinary school, college or institute that offers it. As an example, if your desire is to become a chef specializing in Italian cuisine, then of course you will concentrate on those institutes that provide the proper training. Or you can select a college based on its ranking or other criteria (we'll cover a few of those later) and then pick the most ideal degree program available that is consistent with your career goals in Utah. However you make your choice, culinary schools typically fall under 3 distinct categories:

  • Cooking Schools. Some cooking schools do offer degree programs, but typically they offer certificates or diplomas. Their programs tend to be more focused in nature, and they can range anywhere from one or two months to as long as three or four years.
  • Community Colleges. Local community colleges tend to be more economical than most private colleges and many have exceptional programs. They almost exclusively offer Associate's Degrees and are established and maintained by either state or local governments.
  • Culinary Schools and Institutes. The advanced degrees and training are furnished by culinary schools and institutes. Some institutes provide the most highly regarded and highest standard of training in academia. However, since they are private institutions they generally can be more costly than their public counterparts, some a lot more.

Selecting a culinary school will not only be dependent on the kind of program or degree you want to pursue, but also the amount of money you have to invest in your education. If you decide to attend a public institution to reduce expenses, remember that out-of-state residents usually are required to pay a higher tuition than in-state residents. In addition, numerous community colleges and regional public schools have lower tuition fees for area residents. So make sure to research the public options within Utah to locate the most economical options.

Culinary Online Colleges

One alternative is to enroll in online classes within the convenience of one's home. The practicality and flexibility makes it the best solution for a number of students that continue working full-time while attending college. Also there are more schools online than ever before that are accredited. Remember that a considerable component of the instruction will be provided through an externship. Externships are programs where students train under area chefs or other cooking practitioners so that they receive hands-on training outside of the virtual classroom. Just make certain that the online program you decide on is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized organization (more on this later). Therefore if you are disciplined enough to be able to attend classes and study in this more independent method, attaining a cooking degree online might be the ideal choice for you.
