Culinary Arts College Degree Programs

As with a number of other trades or professions in New Mexico, there are multiple degree option programs that are offered in the culinary arts. At the most basic level, you can enroll in a nearby cooking course, which are more informal in nature and can run from a few hours to several weeks. Typically a diploma or a certificate is provided at the time of completion. They may be broad in nature, for example demonstrating how to cook Spanish dishes, or they may be rather specific and concentrate on one dish, for instance Crepes Suzette. Naturally if you are searching for a more formal education suitable for a career in the restaurant profession, you will undoubtedly want to pursue a degree program. With a degree program, you will be obligated to invest significantly more time.

  • Associate's Degrees can take as long as six months to 2 years to complete.
  • Bachelor's Degrees usually require as much as 4 years of education.
  • Masters Degrees can take an added two years or even longer after obtaining a Bachelor's.

More advanced training options may be offered, such as Doctoral programs or specialized programs made available by culinary arts institutes. Probably the most important issue to keep in mind when deciding on which degree to pursue is making sure that it provides the education and credential needed to advance your ultimate career goals.

Culinary Colleges

After you have made your choice regarding the kind of training and degree that you want to pursue, you can launch your search for the culinary arts school, college or institute that offers it. For instance, if your dream is to become a chef specializing in Italian cuisine, then naturally you will concentrate on those institutes that offer the suitable training. Or you can pick an institute based on its ranking or other factors (we'll discuss several of those later) and then select the best degree program offered that is simpatico with your career objectives in New Mexico. However you arrive at your decision, culinary schools normally fit within 3 different categories:

  • Cooking Schools. A few cooking schools do offer degree programs, but generally they offer diplomas or certificates. Their programs tend to be more specialized in nature, and they can range anywhere from one or two months to as long as 3 or 4 years.
  • Community Colleges. Local community colleges can often be more economical than most private colleges and a large number have outstanding programs. They almost solely offer Associate's Degrees and are established and managed by either local or state governments.
  • Culinary Arts Schools and Institutes. The more advanced training and degrees are offered by culinary schools and institutes. Several institutes provide the most highly regarded as well as the highest standard of training in academia. However, since they are private institutions they often can be more costly than their public counterparts, some a lot more.

Selecting a culinary arts school will not only be based on the kind of degree or program you want to pursue, but also the amount of money you have to spend on your education. If you decide to attend a public institution to minimize expenses, keep in mind that out-of-state residents usually must pay a higher tuition than in-state residents. Furthermore, a lot of community colleges and regional public schools have lower tuition charges for local residents. So be sure to research the public alternatives within New Mexico to find the most economical options.

Online Culinary Schools

One option is to enroll in online classes within the comfort of one's home. The practicality and flexibility makes it the best solution for some students that are still working full time while going to college. Plus there are more schools online than ever before that are accredited. Bear in mind that a substantial portion of the training will be provided through an externship. Externships are programs where students work with regional chefs or other culinary arts practitioners so that they receive hands-on training outside of the internet classroom. Just be sure that the online program you choose is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized agency (more on this later). So if you are dedicated enough to be able to attend classes and study using this more independent fashion, attaining a culinary degree online may be the ideal option for you.
