Culinary College Degree Programs

As with many other trades or professions in New York, there are multiple degree option programs that are available in the culinary arts. At the most elemental level, you can sign up for a local cooking class, which are more informal in nature and can run from just a few hours to a number of weeks. Generally a diploma or a certificate is awarded after completion. They can be broad in nature, for example teaching how to cook Spanish dishes, or they may be quite targeted and concentrate on one dish, for example Crepes Suzette. Naturally if you are searching for a more conventional education geared towards a career in the restaurant profession, you will probably choose to enroll in a degree program. With a degree program, you will be obligated to commit considerably more time.

  • Associate's Degrees can require as long as six months to two years to finish.
  • Bachelor's Degrees usually entail as much as 4 years of instruction.
  • Masters Degrees can take an additional two years or even longer after attaining a Bachelor's.

Additional advanced degree alternatives may be available, such as Doctoral or specialized programs offered by culinary arts institutes. The most important issue to bear in mind when deciding on which degree to pursue is making sure that it supplies the education and degree necessary to advance your ultimate career objectives.

Cooking Colleges

Once you have made your selection regarding the type of training and degree that you would like to pursue, you can launch your search for the culinary school, college or institute that offers it. For example, if your goal is to become a chef specializing in Spanish cuisine, then of course you will focus on those colleges that offer the suitable training. Or you can select an institute based on its ranking or other criteria (we'll cover some of those later) and then select the best degree program available that is simpatico with your career objectives in New York. However you make your choice, cooking schools typically fit within three distinct categories:

  • Cooking Schools. Some cooking schools do offer degree programs, but typically they offer certificates or diplomas. Their programs tend to be more specialized in nature, and they can range anywhere from 1 or 2 months to as long as 3 or 4 years.
  • Community Colleges. Area community colleges can be more affordable than the majority of private colleges and a large number have outstanding programs. They almost solely offer Associate's Degrees and are established and maintained by either local or state governments.
  • Culinary Schools and Institutes. The advanced degrees and training are provided by culinary colleges and institutes. Some institutes provide the most highly regarded and highest standard of training in academia. However, since they are private institutions they tend to be more expensive than their public counterparts, some a lot more.

Picking a culinary institute will not only be based on the type of program or degree you would like to pursue, but also the amount of money you have to spend on your education. If you decide to attend a public institution to lower costs, keep in mind that out-of-state residents usually must pay a higher tuition than in-state residents. Also, many community colleges and regional public schools have lower tuition charges for area residents. So don't forget to research the public options within New York to locate the most affordable options.

Online Cooking Programs

One alternative is to attend online training within the convenience of one's residence. The practicality and flexibility makes it the only solution for some students that are still working full time while going to school. In addition there are more schools online than ever before that are accredited. Bear in mind that a substantial portion of the training will be provided through an externship. Externships are programs where students work under regional chefs or other cooking professionals to ensure that they obtain hands-on training beyond the online classroom. Just make certain that the online school you enroll in is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged organization (more on this later). So if you are dedicated enough to be able to go to classes and study in this more independent method, attaining a cooking degree online may be the right option for you.
